The classroom remains the most radical space of possibility in the academy. –bell hooks

The Five Pillars of Social Justice Curriculum

Social Justice-Oriented

Teaching for social justice is more than just teaching about issues of social injustice; teaching for social justice also encompasses the way that one teaches. SJ students are encouraged to embrace the process of learning, to question constructions of knowledge, and supported in whatever way best suits their needs. As a school, we have embraced and implemented Mastery Learning and Grading, reflecting our understanding that education should be first and foremost about growth and development of skills and knowledge, rather than simply about traditional notions of success and failure.

Rigorous

We hold high expectations of all SJ students, and teachers design curriculum meant to prepare students

Culturally Relevant and Responsive

In order to prepare students to be conscientious global citizens and compassionate leaders, students must know themselves as they bring their full identities into the classroom. SJ students are not asked to check who they are at the door; rather, they are encouraged to take pride in who they are and where they come from. Our teachers make it a core component of their teaching to give students the space to study their backgrounds, learn their histories, share their knowledge, and advocate for their communities beyond the classroom walls.

Inclusive

SJ is a full-inclusion school

Student-Centered

Above all else, SJ students are always the motivation for what we do.
