Welcome to the 2016-17 school year. I am excited to begin our 15th year as an entity in the Belmont Zone of Choice! The School of Social Justice formed in 2002 as an academy at Belmont High School and moved to the Miguel Contreras Learning Complex in 2006 as a small learning community. We became an LAUSD Pilot School in 2013.
As one of the founding teachers, I have spent nearly my entire career in the School of Social Justice and I cannot imagine working anywhere else. The Social Justice teachers and staff are empathetic listeners, they challenge and empower students, and they are devoted to the community. We work diligently to create engaging and culturally relevant curriculum that focuses on human rights and service to the community. All students participate in an advisory program that guides students in navigating the college entrance process and develops their social-emotional competencies.
I am proud of the work we have done over the last fifteen years and I cannot wait to see what the next fifteen will bring.
